REGIONAL NEWS APRIL 16TH, 2026

Johnson County, Ky – With warm, dry and windy weather pushing fire danger higher, firefighters are urging people to follow Kentucky’s spring burning laws as the spring forest fire season continues through April thirtieth. Deputy Chief Brian Jeffiers with W.R. Castle Fire‑Rescue in Johnson County says it has already been a busy spring, with several unusually large fires fueled by very dry conditions and gusty winds. He says people should use common sense, burn only natural vegetation and skip burning on dry or windy days, because anyone who starts a brush fire can be cited and billed for suppression costs.

Police detained Washington, 58‑year‑old Daryl Adkins of Pikeville and 51‑year‑old Lashawn Walker of Columbus, then got a search warrant and say they found large bags of suspected meth, plus oxycodone, crack cocaine and fentanyl hidden in a washer and dryer. All three were taken to the Pike County Detention Center on felony trafficking and possession charges, with Washington also charged as a fugitive and Adkins accused of bringing fentanyl into the jail.
