Magoffin Board Improperly Grants Leave

The Herald-Leader reports state investigators found the Magoffin Board of Education improperly granted leaves for absence to two county officials, both former teachers, for years. Circuit Court Clerk Tonya Ward and Property Valuation Administrator Jerry Swiney were granted professional leaves and allowed to keep the sick days they had accumulated as teachers, which is not sanctioned by state law. The Office of Education Accountability ruled the board had to rescind the leaves of absence it had granted for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 years. The two said they did not realize the requests were illegal and had no problem accepting the agency’s decision.
