The Associated Press reports a bear in Alaska mauled a Kentucky man. 57-year-old Douglas Adkins, of Jenkins, Kentucky, and his hunting guide, 63-year-old LaVern Beier, of Juneau, Alaska, were returning from a brown bear hunt on Admiralty Island around 8:30 p.m. Thursday evening. They came in contact with a brown bear, which became startled, and attacked Adkins. The attack was said to be brief and the bear left the area after a short time. Adkins was treated for non-life-threatening injuries in Juneau.
