$95,000 Fine Proposed for Radioactive Material Dumped in Estill Landfill

The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet announced Friday that it had reached an agreement in principle with Advanced Disposal Services Blue Ridge Landfill, Inc. on an Agreed Order over the illegal dumping of radioactive materials there last year. As part of the Agreed Order, Blue Ridge is required to develop a Corrective Action Plan for the disposal of the material and create a plan for detecting and preventing future disposal of radioactive material. Blue Ridge has also agreed to a $95,000 civil penalty to which it is allowed to be offset by allowing the company to perform supplemental environmental projects. Secretary Charles Snavely said “We take this action to ensure that the citizens of Estill County and the local environment are fully protected, with assurances that this will not happen again.”
