The Kentucky Department of Revenue wants all Kentuckians to be aware of possible schemes that are designed to steal identities and important personal information. With tax season approaching, the IRS and tax industry representatives remind taxpayers to be on the lookout for an array of evolving tax scams related to identity theft and refund fraud. Some prevalent scams include: requesting fake tax payments on prepaid debit cards, iTunes and other gift cards or wire transfer; targeting students and parents and demanding payment for a fake “Federal Student Tax”; sending a fraudulent IRS bill related to the Affordable Care Act; and soliciting W-2 information from payroll and human resources professionals. If you think you may owe taxes, you can call the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040.
