Child Safety Tips During the Holidays

The holiday season is a time for decorations, parties, and fun. But experts at the Kentucky Poison Control Center say it is also a time when young children can find themselves in serious trouble. Maria Chapman of the Kentucky Poison Control Center says calls to their hotline are different during the holidays, with children taking bites out of plants, Christmas trees, and various decorations. Chapman says keep decoration like holly and mistletoe, as well as egg nog and other alcoholic drinks, out of reach. Medications, cosmetics and cleaning supplies pose the most common poisoning threat during the holidays as children are out of their normal element and relatives’ homes aren’t always childproof. It’s a good idea to voice any concerns before you reach your destination. If you’re concerned your child might have swallowed something poisonous, call the poison control hotline at 1-800-222-1222.
