A Pikeville energy company is looking to reclaim two mountaintop removal sites with solar farms. The Berkeley Energy Group and EDF Renewable Energy announced plans to install solar panels on two sites outside of Pike County that would help bolster the economy of the coal region and put many former miners back to work. Adam Edelen, former state auditor, and Berkeley executive Ryan Johns came up with the idea over a year ago to developed land held by Berkeley. The proposed solar farm would generate between 50 and 100 megawatts of electricity to sell to power companies in the eastern United States. Development costs are currently being evaluated for the two sites.
