NCAA President Mark Emmert made a statement Wednesday, March 11th, regarding the upcoming tournaments and the Coronavirus.
“I have decided to conduct our upcoming championship events, including the Division 1 men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, with only essential staff and limited family attendance.”
This decision is made in the wake of the growing issue of Coronavirus. President Emmert believes this is currently the best action to take in order to keep the safety of the student athletes, their families, the company, and the public in check. However, he also makes mention that this decision is not permanent.
“We recognize the opportunity to compete in an NCAA national championship is an experience of a lifetime for the students and their families. Today, we will move forward and conduct championships consistent with the current information and will continue to monitor and make adjustments as needed.”
