Norton man fatally shot wife and mother-in-law in apparent murder-suicide

According to authorities, a Virginia man killed his wife and mother-in-law before turning the gun on himself in a double-murder suicide over the weekend.

Officials say the Norton Police Department received a 911 call around noon from someone in the home. 

Vivian A. Wampler, 53, and her mother, Elizabeth A. Sturgill, 81, were shot and killed inside a residence in Norton, Va., near the Kentucky border, on April 10, 2022. The remains of the deceased were discovered in the afternoon.

Bryan C. Wampler, 53, the alleged assailant, was also discovered in the house. Soon after the bodies were found, police say they discovered the gun suspected to have been used in the slayings.

There are currently few details available. The incident’s possible motive has not been revealed by law authorities.

Officers from Norton Police Department were the first to arrive and conduct a survey of the residence. Around 3:00 p.m. the Virginia State Police began investigating the murder scene.

Local officials initially refused to release the identities of the deceased.

Both police agencies involved have stated that there is no proof of a public safety threat.
