Logging of nearly 4,000 acres of tree at the Daniel Boone National Forest is being challenged by a lawsuit from Kentucky Heartwood.

Officials with Kentucky Heartwood made claims that the logging could increase landslides. It would also remove old growth trees and damage important ecological habitats.

According to Kentucky Heartwood Ecologist Jim Scheff, documents point to the Forestry Service being aware of the risks from previous logging projects done in the area.

According to U.S. Forestry Service website, the logging is part of a much larger project called the ‘South Red Bird Wildlife Habitat Enhancement Project’. By removing older forests, This project aims to improve the habitat by making room for newer forests. The U.S. Forestry Service would not comment on the situation.

In nearly 20 years, this is the largest timber project in the Daniel Boone National Forest.
