Woman Sentenced to Six Months of Rehab and Three Months on Probation for Abandoning Her 5 Year Old Autistic Son

A woman from Indiana learned her sentence Today after she was arrested in Kentucky for abandoning her non-verbal and autistic 5 year old son in Colerain Township, Ohio.

33 year old Heather Adkins was ordered by Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Jennifer Branch to receive six months of mental health and substance abuse treatment, then three months of probation right after. She has also been required to continue to have no contact with her child.

Adkins was charged with endangering children and kidnapping in March and faced a maximum of 11 years behind bars. But after a recent plea deal, where she pled guilty to the endangering children charges, the kidnapping charge was dropped.

According to Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters, that in February Adkins drove from Indiana to Tennessee to drop off two of her three children with a friend, and on her way back to Indiana, abandoned her son in Colerain Township.

Deters also said, that on February 17th , Adkins drove to Copper Creek and kicked her son out of the car, and left him in the in the road with no sidewalks and the pouring rain. Motorists passing by found the child and called 911. According to court documents and recordings, the call happened around 9 p.m.

Shelbyville residents saw photos of the child that were released by the police, and recognized the child as Martin Thomas Adkins. Two days later, Adkins was arrested in Georgetown, Kentucky on an unrelated outstanding warrant.
