An update from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office:

On March 6, 2023, at approximately 8:40 pm Deputies Brad Tucker and Derek Dennis were conducting an illegal narcotic investigation. The investigation started after receiving a tip that illegal narcotics were being transported from Pulaski County into Wayne County. While Deputies Tucker and Dennis were set up for the drug interdiction at the Pulaski and Wayne County line they observed the suspected vehicle crossing into Wayne County. When this vehicle turned onto Frazer Chapel Road from East Kentucky Highway  90 the Deputies conducted a traffic stop for investigation. When the Deputies approached the driver they noticed a large zip-lock bag laying on the floorboard. The driver was removed from the vehicle and as he removed his hand from his pants pocket a small plastic bag fell to the ground. This bag contained a small amount of suspected methamphetamine. Deputy K-9 Unit Dunya was then deployed for a free-air sniff around the vehicle. Deputy K-9 Dunya alerted positive for illegal narcotics inside the vehicle. At that point the Deputies retrieved the zip-lock bag from the vehicle floorboard which contained 4 smaller plastic bags of suspected methamphetamine.

Deputy Dennis then charged and arrested James B. Townsend of Somerset, Ky. for trafficking in a controlled substance-1st  degree (greater than or equal to 2 grams of methamphetamine) and failure to have license in possession.

While processing paperwork at the Wayne County Sheriff Office the suspected methamphetamine was tested using the Sheriff’s Office Tru-Narc Analysis Equipment. The substance tested positive as being methamphetamine with a total weight of 117.5 grams.

Townsend was lodged in the Wayne County Detention Center.

The investigation is continuing by the Wayne County Sheriff Office.
