How much is too much and is it worth it?

While the advantages of the Mountain Parkway Expansion have been celebrated, with the project nearing completion after more than 60 years of work, some of the people impacted by the change are not as thrilled as others.

The Cole Family has lived on their Salyersville property since around the time the road project began in 1963. Now, with the Magoffin-Floyd segment of the four-lane coming through the Short Fork area, they are preparing to pack away their memories. Kim Lykins said her father, Benny Cole, was born on the property and raised her and the rest of her siblings there, with his wife Patricia. When Patricia passed, she was laid to rest in the family cemetery on the property and now may have to be relocated because of the expansion project, putting this family in a state of worry and grief. Kim and her sister Tina are concerned for their dad who has been diagnosed with Broken Heart Syndrome as the stress of leaving his home and relocating his wife’s grave weighs on him.
